Sometimes the best ideas come from the worst situations. In December of 2025, I broke my collarbone in an inbounds bone breaking East-Coast-Ice debacle(shoutout to all conditions, love me some carving on hard pack). Suddenly, the mountains I loved were off-limits, replaced by weeks of recovery and rehabilitation.

During those long weeks on the couch, I couldn‘t stop thinking about being in the mountains and avalanche education. Last summer, I spent several weeks hiking in the Presidential Range, assessing the terrain for avalanche hazards—including steep slopes, wind-scoured features, and hidden topographic traps and rock quality. I was planning on Mount Washington avelanche training. I‘d read the forecasts, and made countless potential decisions in the field. But I realized something: there was no way to practice avalanche decision-making without actually being in the backcountry. I had ran through all of MTN Senses‘ Avalanche safety course by Mark Smiley , but I still felt like I was missing out on something crucial.

Being and Designer and Developer, that‘s when AvyIQ was born. I wanted to create a platform where people could develop their decision-making skills in realistic scenarios, learning from mistakes without real-world consequences. A place where you could face the same complex situations you‘d encounter on an actual tour—reading forecasts, assessing terrain, weighing risk factors—but from the safety of your home. I‘m humbled by how much I have to learn and welcome your input.

What started as a recovery project has grown into something I‘m truly passionate about. This platform isn‘t meant to replace formal avalanche education (please take your AIARE or AST courses!), but to complement it—giving you a space to practice and refine your decision-making between trips.
